Campgrounds and Camping
Thunder on the Mountain is a music and camping festival. Think of the campgrounds as a big parking lot with large stalls. When you arrive to the mountain, parking attendants will direct you to the next available stall. You park your vehicle and set up camp directly behind your vehicle. “Primitive” means there are no water/electric hookups in the campsites.
How big are the campsites?
Each camping pass allows you ~450 square feet of campground. You must fit the size of your vehicle in this area. The rest of the area can be filled with tents, chairs, coolers, etc. behind your vehicle.
What is “first come, first served”?
Each vehicle is parked in the order they arrive, hence “first come, first served.” You cannot pick out your own campsite; a parking attendant will direct you to the next available campsite. You park your vehicle and set up camp directly behind your vehicle; you cannot “move” your campsite to a different location.
What if we have a large group and only 1 vehicle?
Each camping pass allows you ~450 square feet of campground, regardless of the number of people in your group. You must fit the size of your vehicle in this ~450 square feet. The rest of the area can be filled with tents, chairs, coolers, etc. behind your vehicle. If you would like more room at your campground, simply purchase 2 (or more) camping passes.
What if we have a large group with 2 or more vehicles?
If you want to camp together with multiple vehicles: you must arrive together in a caravan in order to camp the vehicles next to each other. You cannot save spots for vehicle(s) that are arriving later.
Can I buy more than one camping pass?
Absolutely! Each camping pass allows you ~450 square feet of campground, so if you purchase 2 camping passes you get twice the area. You must fit the size of your vehicle in this area.
Can we park extra vehicles somewhere?
No. Overnight parking is not available. Plan accordingly and carpool.
Can we have more than 5 people in a vehicle?
Yes. The “5 people per vehicle” is a general guideline to help encourage you to carpool. Just keep in mind that each camping pass allows you ~450 square feet of campground, regardless of the number of people in your group. You must fit the size of your vehicle in this ~450 square feet.
Hint: if you purchase 2 camping passes you get twice the camping area.
What do you mean by ~450 square feet?
All campground sizes are approximate, and subject to change without notice. Some campgrounds will be larger, some will be smaller.
No food or drinks are allowed into the concert grounds except unopened water bottles. Leave your food and drink at the campgrounds when you go see the music.
Glass bottles are not allowed anywhere on the festival grounds, including the campgrounds! All glass bottles will be confiscated upon entering the festival which includes the campgrounds. No kegs, either.
NO OPEN FIRES. Fires must be modest and in small, contained and covered fire pits. This policy will be strictly enforced. Acoustic music is welcome.
No electrified music gear.
PLEASE follow these instructions if you are planning on using a grill:
You can use gas/propane fuel sources or charcoal, but scavenging for wood on site is NOT permitted. The fire must be entirely contained and off the ground. Please keep the fires as small as possible and extinguish them as soon as you are finished. When you are done cooking with charcoal, put it out with water before going into the show, going to sleep or leaving your camp, rather than letting it burn out over time. In any case, DO NOT DUMP COALS ON THE GROUND or in the trash until they are entirely cool. After the coals are COMPLETELY DEAD, dispose of them properly.
1.) Any size RV: Class A, Class B, or Class C
2.) Any size Bus
3.) Any vehicle wider or longer than a normal 15 passenger van
4.) Any vehicle Towing a trailer, camper, RV or 5th wheel of any size. If you’re hitching anything, it’s an “RV.”
All RVs require an RV Unreserved Camping Pass, Reserved Campsite, or RV PASS for VIP. Please visit our tickets page for more information and look for the section “RV Passes.” Any vehicle that requires an RV Pass but arrives on site without an RV Pass will be turned around. This rule is strictly enforced, and absolutely NO exceptions are made.
Water and Electric hookups are available for Reserved Campsites ONLY. Please note that Reserved Campsites are extremely limited in number and sell out well in advance.
RV Unreserved does NOT include any water or electric hookups. Small or silent generators are allowed. A free water/dump station is located on the Main Festival Venue, however it is not readily accessible once the venue is rockin’. You will want to plan accordingly and ration your water through the weekend.
